Chapter Seventeen

A Little Ray Of Hope

Gracechurch Street

Tuesday, 23 July 1811

The same day

Having left Mr. Collins and her mother, Elizabeth chose to remain in her room until it was time to join the family for dinner. No matter how hard she tried, it was impossible to block out the remembrance of so many wearisome events. “Oh, to be away from all of this madness,” she fretted.

Stopping in front of the mirror, she placed her hands on her hips and declared, “Nothing can erase the follies of my family; not to mention that you, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, have now refused two offers of marriage!” Elizabeth momentarily covered her eyes, no longer able to look upon herself. It is of little use. In this instance, it is nearly impossible to follow my own philosophy and think only of the past as it gives me pleasure.

Walking to the window, Elizabeth observed the darkening sky and suspected it would likely rain before the afternoon was over. If it continued into the evening, there would be yet another vexation for her mother.

“Oh, Mama, why must you always be set against me? I truly do understand your concerns. More than you know.”

Gently touching her pocket, Elizabeth took out Darcy’s little book and held it reverently in her hands. Once again, she tenderly caressed the place where he had written his name. “William….” A single tear slid down her cheek. Wiping it with the palm of her hand, she closed the book and slipped it back into her pocket. Moving to the bed, Elizabeth quietly curled up on the soft covering and closed her eyes.
